Ruby glass, also known as cranberry glass, is a rich, deep red colour which has a history and folklore of its own. The colour is achieved by adding gold to the ingredients that make crystal. The Romans first made gold ruby but the secret was lost with the demise of the Roman Empire. Rediscovered in the 17th century in Bohemia, it was some years before the secret became widely known. Cranberry glass became particularly popular during the Victorian period and is now very popular with collectors.
